RECYCLING MAKES MORE SENSE THAN EVER.
You'd have a hard time finding a reason why NOT to recycle bottles and
cans. After all, if you throw them away, it's a waste of natural
resources, a waste of energy and a waste of money. An aluminum can, for
example, can sit in a landfill taking decades to decompose, or it can be
recycled and be back on the shelf in about 90 days, thereby:
- Reducing the need for virgin bauxite
ore
- Saving enough energy to run a
television for almost three hours
- Putting cash in the pocket of the
person who took it to the recycling center
Some materials like aluminum can be
recycled indefinitely as there is no change to the materials. Other
recycled materials like paper require a percentage of raw materials
(wood fibers) to be added to compensate for the degradation of
existing fibers. Recycling aluminum saves 95% of the energy cost of
processing new aluminum because the melting temperature is reduced
from 900 °C to 600 °C. It is by far the most efficient material to
recycle. Recycling plastic saves 70% of the energy used in creating
new plastic, and paper recycling saves 40% of the energy required to
make a new product.
